Anchor Windlass

  • An anchor windlass is a mechanical device powered by an electric or hydraulic motor. It has one or two wildcats – the notched wheel that holds the anchor chain. Some have warping heads for mooring or anchor lines
  • CG (TICONDEROGA Class); DDG (ARLEIGH BURKE Class); LSD (HARPERS FERRY Class); PSC

Cable/Hose Reel

  • Hose reels are mainly built for a particular purpose. The hose reels are mainly used to reel hoses for fuel supply or to reel cables
  • MCM (AVENGER Class); OPC (HERITAGE Class); PSC; T-AO (JOHN LEWIS Class)

Capstan

  • A capstan is a vertical rotating shaft machine used for line handling – winding lines – during mooring and getting underway. It can be powered by electric or hydraulic. All capstans have two basic parts: the power source and the rotating shaft (or drum). In many cases the drum is visible, and the motor is located below deck. Capstans are usually located on the forecastle.
  • CVN (FORD Class); DDG (ARLEIGH BURKE Class); LHA (AMERICA Class); LSD (HARPERS FERRY Class)

Winches

  • Ship winches are composed of an electric or hydraulic motor and one or two drums which are used primarily for tensioning mooring lines, winding up and storing cables and line, operating davits, and ramps. Rotation speed is adjustable.
  • CVN (FORD Class); LHA (AMERICA Class); LPD (SAN ANTONIO Class); LSD (HARPERS FERRY Class); MCM (AVENGER Class); T-AO (KAISER Class); T-AOE (SUPPLY Class)
